I heard of info-sponging on a podcast. At the end of the podcast, the guest mentioned to the host, the term. The irony for me was that while I was learning that someone had invented a catchy new name for it, the concept I had known and practiced my whole life. I’ve since learned the name originated with the founder of Priceline. The concept itself, my modus operandi.
Infosponging is exploring other topics unrelated to your industry, gaining new perspective in order to avoid the myopia that can plague a business, an individual, and shining this new light back on your own industry, or self. Most accurately expressed, in my opinion, is that, absorbing information from different industries and people, and making connections and distinctions, is how we innovate!
I’ve been absorbing and connecting for so long now that I am convinced all things and all people are connected, in some way, shape, or form. I love the discovery Priceline made, this concept and name. Why stop there, though? The revelations received through this process, are just that, revelations!
Revelations are what guide my own “infosponging hikes.” These hikes are an innovative method of tapping in to who we really are. Ironically, our unique, inherent identities drive these connections. The method was arrived at through absorbing information from an unrelated industry (hiking) and making the connections that stoked the revelatory fire and illuminated the path forward for this blog and business. Every connection made discloses something we did not know that we did not know. We are more complete as a human race, as individuals, absorbing and connecting, lifting and growing.
